“Dance.” (2015) - Composer’s note

“A few year ago, while living in New York, I discovered the practice of performing new contemporary art music in bars - the absolute perfect environment to hear new and experimental music. I find there's a certain vibrant energy one can get in a place like that versus the slightly more “one must be on one's best behaviour” feeling one can sometimes get when sitting in the more traditional concert hall. Witnessing the audience reactions to the music in this kind of setting, I started toying with the idea of how cool it could be to have, instead of a DJ, a group of classical musicians performing contemporary dance music in nightclubs, and while I've always incorporated elements of rock/metal and electronic dance music in my compositions, from around this time I allowed myself to let those influences be more pronounced.

Musically, “Dance.” is about juxtapositions, in particular the slightly old fashioned/almost “plodding” brass choral (a mixture of Bach-meets-Shostakovitch) fighting against the “newer” E. D. M. elements. This is combined with a re-working of a guitar riff from a song I used to play while in a rock band at varsity (the 7/4 pattern heard at the beginning), and a pattern (heard repeatedly in the piano) from a string quartet of mine called “Unlike” - a piece of mine I have a bit of a soft spot for, particularly due to a memory I have of when it was first performed (by myself and very close friends in The Night Light Collective (formerly The ShhArt Ensemble) in a vintage garage in Salt River) and while playing it, having to smile when I noticed an audience member dancing to herself at the back of the venue...”
