Laurie Wright - Wendy Mckenzie (Acoustic Busking Camden Town)

This song is probably the best song I’ve ever written. I was 19 years old living in Bristol, and I was always busking with my acoustic guitar - one day walking past college green (government building) there appeared to be a woman down on her luck and in a really bad way. It struck me as unsurprising but pissed me off that in this environment surrounded by fellas in suits and briefcases with millions in the bank, they couldn’t be arsed to even acknowledge her, let alone help. And the only one who gave her 5 minutes was a 19 year old alcoholic drug addict - me. Is it virtue signalling? Yes.. was this a crafty little term everyone loved banging on about back then? No.. there are also lots of other things said in this song that I’d probably subconsciously edit out for fear of being cancelled these days, and so I’m glad I did write this then - as a pissed 19 year old lad who didn’t give a fuck - but who also really did give a fuck about people. And I still care about people. I might not have all the time in the world anymore because of all of this that’s kicking off - but I still give a fuck. And I also simultaneously still really don’t give a flying fuck (if you catch my drift) 😂.

The 5 minutes that followed was a pretty everyday exchange between 2 lost souls - she was annihilated and chose to open up to a complete stranger - something that happens every day on the street. The end of this video will explain why it was such an everyday experience, these kind of exchanges - and also explains why it’s so easy to fall in to drug addiction and alcoholism as a busker, when your colleagues and counterparts out there are majority also alcoholics and drug addicts.
