Piano Concerto no.1 - "METAMORPHOSIS" - original (full, 2024)

This is my first full concerto for piano. The title refers to the original goal where each movement would get progressively more complex harmonically and structurally.

notes:
1st mov: very gaudy intro to the concerto which contains themes that are used throughout the rest of the piece. There are many influences and straight quotations to my favorite composers Rach, Prokofiev, Feinberg, and many more. Admittedly, even I cannot play it at the written tempo.

2nd mov (my fav): much slower and intimate compared to the first movement. The harmony is more elevated as well, respecting the title of the piece. Unlike the 1st movement, this one derives references from video game soundtracks and cinema scores, on top of very obvious allusions to classical composers.

3rd mov: the largest and most integrated movement by far, complete with it's own 6-minutes cadenza sequence. The harmony is deceptively simple at first, but most of the harmonic complexity I promised to my followers unveils itself in the cadenza, which is to me the most liberal sequence in the whole concerto. This movement has references to some of my favorite pop singers and rappers.

Overall, the piece took almost 12 months to create. A LOT changed in the lives of me and people around me during this duration, so this concerto is very personal to me.


I want to thank my mentor Erin Hales, who taught me piano performance for five years. She is great; it is because of her support and the kind of pieces we worked on that I was able to write a piece of this scale and complexity.

I want to thank my buddy Fred Biddix, who was my #1 supporter throughout the whole year of writing this. A CRAZY amount of things changed in his life too during the writing, but I remember sending him all my crappy drafts and scraps throughout the whole duration. This piece is important to the both of us.
