Proto-oncogenes are genes that produce proteins that are involved in encouraging cells to move through the cell cycle and divide. If they become mutated in such a way that they are permanently active they will encourage the growth of tumours. Mutated counterparts of proto-oncogenes are called oncogenes.

This video explains the role of oncogenes in the development of cancer, using the example of the RAS oncogene.
