Star Wars: Dark Forces (PC, 1995)

As much as I love Andor and Rogue One, Kyle Katarn was the first guy—at least the first I knew about—who recovered the Death Star plans for the Rebellion. His story isn’t canon anymore, and I’ll admit, the Andor version is a better story overall. Honestly, it’s the only thing the Mouse really added to Star Wars that I care about; the rest of it is kind of crap. Yeah, even The Mandalorian. I know, I know—heresy!

But back in the pre-Mouse days, Dark Forces was it. The game had that raw, gritty Star Wars feel. It played a lot like Doom but ran on a slightly better engine—you could jump, look up and down, and explore multi-level areas. It had stormtroopers, Imperial bases, and that perfect LucasArts attention to detail that made it feel like you were right in the middle of a classic Star Wars adventure. The sequel (Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight) is even better—honestly one of the best games ever made in my opinion—but this one still deserves its due. I didn’t own it back in the day because I was still on an Apple system, and I don’t think this one ever made it there. But now that I’ve played it, I can say it’s absolutely worth the time.

Some facts:
Developed and published by LucasArts in 1995, Star Wars: Dark Forces was the first FPS set in the Star Wars universe. It ran on the Jedi game engine, which was built in-house and allowed for verticality, jumping, and interactive environments—features that Doom didn’t have at the time. Players controlled Kyle Katarn, a mercenary working for the Rebellion, across 14 missions that spanned Imperial facilities, mines, and starships. The game introduced the Dark Troopers, a new Imperial weapon that would later reappear in The Mandalorian. Dark Forces laid the groundwork for the Jedi Knight series, which expanded the formula with lightsabers and Force powers.
