I thought I'd use this comment as an opportunity to talk about some complex dynamics between artists/content creators and their audience, specific to performance and movement arts.

There's been a flurry of negative comments on that video.

Of course, with 22M views, no surprise there. While I don't want to focus on the negatives, some of these remarks do highlight some things worth talking about.

I want nothing more than to just record a trick, stop filming, upload and go about my day. After all, I spent years being able to perform some of these skills. Having to then craft a video premise can feel tedious.

But then, there would be no audience. That barely works for being an effective performer on stage.

Some people are awesome and appreciate the skill no matter what, but that's not always the case.

The audience needs a reason to watch, a way to relate to the performer, and there needs to be some pay-off at the end.

In this case, it was just me building up suspense for about a minute using whatever absurd thoughts came to mind … and a candy.

And wow, some people REALLY hated that. So, let's talk about it.
