What practices should you put into place when you run into issues this calving season? How can you prepare your herd for the most important time of year? What tools should you have in your toolbox? Lindsay Waechter-Mead, Clinical Practice Veterinarian at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Great Plains Veterinary Medical Center, explained the key strategies you should use during the most pivotal points of calving. Mead covered practices to keep in mind as you run into challenges, tools that can aide in the process as well as vaccines and other solutions that can begin a healthy life for the newborn calf.

Mead is a fourth-generation cattlewoman and grew up on a diversified farm outside of Hastings, Nebraska. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in veterinary science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and then received her doctorate in veterinary medicine from Kansas State University in 2008. At the Great Plains Veterinary Medical Center, Mead teaches veterinary students production medicine and reaches out to Nebraska veterinarians and producers through extension programming. Her veterinary interests center around cow/calf health and preventative medicine, specifically how the environment affects calf immunity. She is passionate about rural agriculture and what our profession can do to positively influence rural communities to ensure that generations can continue to enjoy the life that she loves. Lindsay and her husband Clay have three children, Anna, Harrison and Norah, and keep busy with their Red Angus seedstock cattle herd.
