The TMC9660 integrates multiple functions in a single IC, including:

Gate drivers for up to 4 half bridges, with independently configurable drive currents and a variety of protection functions;

A measurement unit incorporating the amplifiers, filters, and ADCs needed to make measurements of phase currents and other analog quantities in the system;

A motion control core that uses information from the measurement unit and rotor position sensors to generate the commutation signals needed to spin the motor. Layered on top of this are ramp generation functions and servo controls allowing smooth, high-level control of position, velocity, or torque with control loop and PWM speeds to 100 kHz;

A pre-programmed microcontroller for overall control and communication, and support for scripting functionality for standalone operation, and a power management unit for generating all required internal voltages from the motor supply, plus two configurable outputs for powering external loads.

The TMC9660 can be configured to support brushed or brushless DC motors as well as two-phase steppers, allowing the use of the same hardware building block and software interface for driving a variety of different motors in different applications.

In the past, the transformations for FOC required a separate digital controller, but the TMC9660’s integration brings the necessary functions for commutation and motion control of several common motor types onto one chip, supported by a well-developed configuration tool that hides most of the details involved with motor drive and motion control. This enables a small BoM size and reduces design effort, while allowing for higher adaptability and potential design reuse.
The integration of the servo controller with all three PI controllers simplifies setup and tuning. Combining this with the high frequency control loop enables fast reaction times, high bandwidth, and superior dynamics.
The 8 point ramp generator provides additional simplification and performance enhancements for position movements or velocity mode operation. This offers three different segments for both the acceleration and deceleration phases, with programmable rates and transition velocities, with the actual ramp calculated on the fly when a new target position or velocity is received.

Analog Devices offers two TMC9660 evaluation kits that are part of the TRINAMIC evaluation board system and supported by the free and easy-to-use TMCL-IDE.
The TMC9660-3PH-EVKIT is designed for three-phased BLDC motors up to 10 amps. It supports the optional use of ABN encoders or digital hall sensors for position feedback and can also control a brake chopper and an electromechanical brake with the fourth half-bridge.
The TMC9660-STP-EVKIT is intended for use with two-phase bipolar stepper motors up to 5 amps. It can be used with ABN encoders and reference switches for position feedback.
The Analog Devices TMC9660 is a versatile motor control platform that can be used in many applications including robotics, power tools, outdoor power equipment, lab and medical equipment, e-bikes, and LEVs.
