PFAS, the full name of which is per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, is a general term for more than 4,700 chemicals. Because of their extremely strong carbon-fluorine bonds, they have been widely used in factories, military bases and other places for nearly a century, causing serious environmental pollution. Among them, PFOA and PFOS are the most common and dangerous, and have been detected in human blood around the world. Although the EPA has established non-mandatory health advisory concentrations, PFAS can still cause cancer, affect the immune system and thyroid hormones, and even cause low birth weight at lower levels. Activated carbon filters, ion exchange systems and reverse osmosis systems are all effective in removing PFOA and PFOS from tap water. Activated carbon filters can adsorb a variety of pollutants, and ion exchange systems use anion exchange resins to remove PFAS, but the cost is relatively high. Reverse osmosis systems use semipermeable membranes to filter PFAS, but some water resources will be wasted.
