Dress shirt darts will completely transform how a shirt looks on you, and they're actually WAY easier to make than people realize!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm using a Brother ST371HD sewing machine which I LOVE, but you can find a sewing machine on Facebook Marketplace or any other used online marketplace for seriously like $50 or less. You DON'T need an expensive $300 machine to do this at all! Ask your grandma for hers or borrow one from a relative if you have too. Seriously though, DIY tailoring is one of the CHEAPEST and LIFE CHANGING things you can do to your clothes!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stitch type - Straight stitch
Stitch length - 2.5
Stitch width - NA
Stitch tension - 3 to 5

Universal needle 80/12
Polyester thread (both of which can be bought at Walmart for $5)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My measurements for my darts:

5 pins total (starting from the bottom of my shirt going up)

.5 inch ------------------- 12 mm
.5 inch ------------------- 12 mm
.25 inch ------------------- 6 mm
.25 inch ------------------- 6 mm
Top pin is JUST a place holder, so phase your stitch out by this pin

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your darts (depending on the size of your shirt):

.25 inch - 1 inch ------------------- 6 mm - 25 mm
.25 inch - 1 inch ------------------- 6 mm - 25 mm
.25 inch - .5 inches ------------------- 6 mm - 12 mm
.25 inch - .5 inches ------------------- 6 mm - 12 mm
Top pin is JUST a place holder, so phase your stitch out by this pin

I recommend taking in the side seams FIRST (which we did to this same shirt here    • Tailor YOUR OWN Dress Shirts (EVERY S...  ) before putting in darts, as that way you will get the fit right on the sides, and finish the job by fitting your shirt to your lower back. It's not MANDATORY at all, but its recommended. Also, when you're trying your shirt on with the darts temporarily pinned in the back of your shirt, it's gonna feel super uncomfortable. Its because for the first time in your life your shirt will touch your lower back, which feels wrong, at least it did for me. That means you have the RIGHT fit, so be mindful of that.

After you put in your darts and you feel your shirt is too tight IT'S OK! They aren't permanent at all, you can use a seam ripper to take them out and start over, or leave them out and go watch The Queens Gambit instead. Such a good show...

Also, some people like to tie their darts at the end instead of using a back-stitch. That's totally ok, you can do either one. I like the backstitch method because it's easier for me, but it takes practice to avoid getting a dimple. Even if you do get a dimple your shirt will look so much better on you that only YOU would notice it anyway...just saying.
