The Government of Maharashtra has formally scrapped the 5 percent reservation for the Muslim community in education and government jobs through a fresh government resolution. All earlier resolutions and related administrative processes tied to the quota are now cancelled, including admissions and issuance of caste or validity certificates.

The policy, initially introduced in 2014 for socially and educationally backward sections of the Muslim community, had been partially withdrawn earlier, but some procedures remained. The new order nullifies all pending actions and closes the chapter administratively.

The decision has triggered political reactions. NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto criticised the move, alleging it shows the BJP does not value Muslim leaders in the party or its allies. Mumbai Congress president and MP Varsha Gaikwad called the government’s decision “unfortunate.” The Maharashtra government, however, insists this is a legal and administrative closure.
