In March 2018, Elon Musk participated in a Q&A session at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, where he discussed his vision for interplanetary travel and the colonization of Mars. He announced that SpaceX was constructing its first interplanetary ship, with plans to commence short test flights in the first half of 2019. Musk emphasized the goal of establishing a base on the Moon and eventually building a city on Mars, complete with essential infrastructure like propellant production facilities and iron foundries, as well as recreational venues such as pizza restaurants and nightclubs.

He acknowledged the significant risks involved in early Mars missions, candidly stating that “probably people will die.” Despite these dangers, he believed that the excitement of exploring the frontier would motivate some individuals to undertake the journey.

Musk also highlighted the importance of making space travel more affordable through rapid and complete reusability of spacecraft, aiming to reduce launch costs to approximately $5 to $6 million. This cost reduction is intended to facilitate more frequent missions and advance the development of a self-sustaining colony on Mars.
