Originating from the Indo-Pacific. Found between depths of 10 and 40 metres, it is often associated with live coral colonies. There is sometimes a blurred red line along the length of the shell at the midline on the dorsal surface. The ventral side is white or whitish, and the shell opening is lined with tooth-like serrations. In this species, the exterior surface of the mantle has numerous pin-like projections that are white-tipped. Carnivorous, the adult tiger cowrie eats coral and various invertebrates, while juveniles eat algae.

Ég finn ekki íslenska nafnið á þessum fallega sjósnigli en ég kalla hann hjálmsnigil. Helmet bonnets prey on echinoderms (especially sea urchins), starting by gripping them using the foot. The snail then makes a hole in the urchin through the combined action of a secretion which is rich in sulfuric acid and by rasping with their radula. The acid secretion is provided by two large proboscis glands. The Red Helmet shells are usually active at night and are almost never seen out during the day. They are now very rare. The shells are collected in some areas for sale to tourists but hopefully the restrictions in place regarding the transportation of shells will reduce this trade. Unfortunately they are still commonly seen for sale to tourists on the side of the road in Tanzania.
