In this video we discuss 2 quick ways to number rows in excel. We go through detailed examples for each way step by step, by using the fill handle or by using the double click method.

Let’s say that you want to number rows in an excel worksheet, such as in this example, in column A.

To do this, first, we left click on cell A1 and type in a 1, then hit the enter key. Next, we type in a 2 in cell A2 and then hit the enter key. This is to establish a pattern. From here, we left click and hold on the first cell A1 and drag over the second cell, cell A2, then release the left click and hold, so both cells are highlighted.

Next, we move the cursor to the bottom right hand corner of the highlighted cells, and the cursor will turn solid black. Now we are going to left click and hold and drag down to where we want the numbers to end, in this case I want the list to end at cell A24. And you can see there is a little pop up guide that will help with this. Then we release the click and hold, and the numbers have been filled in.

One quick note, if you have a long column of data, and all of the rows in the column are filled in, such as in this example, rather than dragging down, start the same way, left click and drag to highlight the first 2 cells, then, again, move the cursor to the bottom right hand corner of the highlighted cells, and the cursor will turn solid black. From here, left double click, I am going to zoom out, and as you see, the rows have been filled in with numbers.
