Bare-earth roads while relatively both cheap and easy to construct, are impassable in the wet season in northern Sarawak as the clay base turns to mush. Many kilometres of such roads have been surface topped with emulsified asphalt. However, this has turned out to be only a temporary solution as the thin layer of asphalt and gravel is soon potholed. A potential option is proposed for the top coursing of low-volume rural roads with biosandstone. The latter is sand cemented by the biological action of select bacteria. Such a project hinges on the ability to mass culture and formulate the bacteria into a form which can be readily used in road-building, and for the biosandstone created to be of sufficient strength and durability.
