In Lord of the Rings, The Númenóreans were a scion of the Edain, the most noble race of Men in the First Age. They were granted the island of Númenor by the Valar at the dawn of the Second Age. From their bloodline came the Dúnedain, a people of noble descent in Middle-earth.

In earlier times, the Dúnedain formed a bond with the Eldar of Tol Eressëa, enchanted by their immortal lives. Yet, fear of their own mortality drove the Númenórean kings to oppress the Valar's followers and those who befriended the Eldar. Their arrogance grew as they spread their colonies throughout Middle-earth. However, the arrival of Sauron changed everything. The dark lord manipulated Ar-Pharazôn, the King of Númenor, and together, they plotted to gain immortality by sailing to Aman.


The island of Númenor faced divine punishment from Eru Ilúvatar, the Creator, for the Númenóreans' breach of the Valar's prohibition.

The catastrophic outcome destroyed Númenor, and the remaining Dúnedain sought refuge in Middle-earth, where they established the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor. But the Black Númenóreans survived and continued their existence in Umbar and Harad.
