Whitebaiting with a set net at the mouth of the Waimakariri River, Canterbury, South Island of New Zealand. These nets are used to fish the tidal zone of this shallow river mouth. The Gobys are like a small fence aimed at directing the whitebait towards the net. As the tide rises and falls the whole arrangement must be moved forwards and backwards.

There are strict regulations which govern the permitted size of the mouth of the net, the length of the Gobys, and how far they may go across the stream or river, so as to ensure that whitebait can still pass.
