"Studying with Miss Bishop" is my latest book, a literary memoir about the six people who were pivotal in my career as a writer. Get it here on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Studying-Miss-...

The book gives portraits of six people who taught me valuable lessons about a literary life. Four of the people in the book are famous writers―Elizabeth Bishop the poet, John Cheever the novelist and short story writer, James Dickey the poet and novelist, and Robert Fitzgerald the translator. The other two are unknown― my Merchant Marine uncle whose bookshelf educated me long after his death and Ronald Perry, a forgotten poet who I corresponded with for years but never actually met. Each of the six essays is a portrait of what it means to dedicate your life to literature.
