Employment can take many different shapes, but there are two main classifications: one type of employment has a definitive start and end date (possibly with an option to renew), and another is at-will. Most people are employed on an at-will basis, but some employers choose to skip over creating written contracts for at-will employment.

If you’re scouting for new hires, don’t dismiss a written contract for any employees — no matter how small the job. Besides spelling out pay and the position at hand, employment contracts are useful tools for counteracting legal complications, setting an employee’s expectations in stone, and providing an added layer of job security.
