Police in kabati area in Murang'a County have rescued an abandoned child who was infested by jiggers. The four year-old girl had been wrapped up in polythene paper and dumped in a maize plantation. Passers-by heard her screaming and called the police. The mother of the child, twenty-three year-old Lucy wanjiru admitted that she had dumped the child in the maize plantation which belongs to her former husband's mother. She accuses the man identified only as john of taking off after impregnating her in the fashion of several men in the area, leaving the mothers without the means to feed and take care of their children. She called on the government to arrest the father of her child. The abandoned child is reported to have been suffering malnutrition. She was given medical attention. The muranga sub-county children's officer mercy kithaka reports that the children's department is handling 20 cases of child-neglect and wants the government to crack down on parents who have not enrolled their children in school.
