In general terms, aperture refers to the size of the lens opening: a higher aperture number (e.g f/14) keeps every element in the photo in focus while a lower aperture number (f/2.8) helps to create a blurred background (also called "bokeh") which enables you to drive attention to a specific element in your photos.
