Tea is an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured or fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to East Asia which probably originated in the borderlands of southwestern China and northern Myanmar. Tea is also rarely made from the leaves of Camellia taliensis. After plain water, it is the most widely consumed drink in the world. There are many different types of tea; some have a cooling, slightly bitter, and astringent flavour, while others have vastly different profiles that include sweet, nutty, floral, or grassy notes. Tea has a stimulating effect in humans primarily due to its caffeine content.
Today, tea consumption is one of the integral parts of the normal life of people in Iran.
Tea cultivation in Iran started in 1897. In this year, one of the men of that period named Mohammad Mirza Kashif al-Sultaneh, who was assigned to serve as the consul general of Iran in India, was able to bring a few tea bags into Iran with great effort when he returned to Iran. According to the studies he had done on the types of tea and how to grow them, he chose the city of Lahijan because of the suitable weather for tea cultivation. Today, this city has become the center of tea cultivation in Iran and different types of tea such as Iranian tea with Gilan aroma are produced there. The tomb of Kashif al-Sultaneh in Lahijan today has become a treasure of the history of Iranian tea in Lahijan.
