Описание к видео Baidyanath Dham Yatra Guide – Everything You Need to Know About Baidyanath Temple Deoghar Jharkhand

Today, we are here in Deoghar, Jharkhand, and we are going to visit the sacred Baidyanath Jyotirlinga and Maa Jaya Durga Shaktipeetha. Baidyanath Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to God Shiva, and Maa Jaya Durga Shaktipeetha is one of the 51 Shaktipeethas dedicated to Goddess Aadi Para Shakti. We are also going to visit some amazing ancient temples nearby, including a few mysterious cave temples. Later in the video, I’ll explain in detail how to reach here. For now, let’s go and explore the Baidyanath Temple Complex!
We need to go through this narrow passage to reach the temple. Along the way, we can see many shops selling puja items, especially peda, a sweet which is the main offering at this temple.
Apart from these two temples, there are a total of 21 temples in this temple compound. Let’s visit all these ancient temples and also explore other nearby temples.
Near the temple, there is a huge pond known as Shivaganga Theertham. Devotees take a sacred dip in the pond before having darshanam.
The main gate of this temple complex is known as Simha dwaram
Deoghar, literally translating to 'the abode of the gods' or 'House of Gods,' is truly the house of gods, as there are many ancient and powerful temples here.
This is an ancient tradition where the temples of Bhagwan Shiva and Devi Parvati are tied together with sacred red threads. Locals believe that anyone who takes part in this ritual is blessed with a long and healthy life. For many families, it’s a tradition passed down through generations. Some volunteers have even lived for more than 100 years, and what's even more amazing — not a single accident has ever been reported during this ritual.
At most Jyotirlinga temples, you’ll see a Trishul (trident) on top of the temple. But at Vaidyanath, there’s something unique — a Panchshool. According to the temple priests, this Panchshool symbolizes the destruction of five major human weaknesses: Lust, Anger, Greed, Attachment, and Jealousy.
The history of this temple goes back to ancient times. Asura King Ravana performed a strict penance in the Himalayas to please God Shiva. He even offered nine of his heads as a sacrifice. Just as he was about to cut off his tenth head, God Shiva appeared, pleased with Ravana’s devotion, and asked what boon he desired.
Ravana asked for permission to take the Kamna Linga to Lanka, so that God Shiva would live there instead of Mount Kailash. God Shiva agreed, but on one condition—if Ravana placed the lingam down anywhere on the way, it would remain there forever.
The celestial gods grew worried and approached God Vishnu for help. God Vishnu asked Varuna Deva, the god of water, to assist. Varuna Deva entered Ravana’s stomach, making him feel a strong urge to urinate when he reached Deoghar.
At that time, God Vishnu took the form of a young cowherd named Baiju. Ravana handed the lingam to Baiju and went to relieve himself. But due to Varuna Deva’s influence, he took too long. Tired of waiting, Baiju placed the lingam on the ground and left.
When Ravana returned, he tried to lift the lingam, but it wouldn’t move. Realizing it was God Vishnu’s doing, he pressed his thumb hard into the lingam in frustration—leaving a mark that is still visible today. From that moment, the Jyotirlinga stayed in Deoghar and came to be known as Baidyanath, meaning “Lord of Physicians,” because God Shiva had healed Ravana’s nine severed heads during his earlier penance.
Another belief says that the name “Baidyanath” comes from the time when God Shiva healed Sati’s heart after it fell at this spot. Ancient texts like the Shiva Purana and Matsya Purana also mention this place. They call it Haritaki Vanam or Ketaki Vanam, meaning forests filled with medicinal plants and divine energy. The Matsya Purana even calls it Arogya Baidyanathitee, linking this place directly to health and healing.
On the way, we saw a huge natural formation of Ganesha Bhagwan on the mountain—it's truly an amazing sight.
Inside the temple complex, we can see temples dedicated to God Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Ganesha Bhagwan, and separate shrines for the Dasha Mahavidyas.
Next, we’re heading to the ancient temples of Trikuta Parvatam, especially the Trikutachal Mahadeva Temple and the hermitage of Sage Dayananda.
Further ahead, we can see one more Hanumanji temple and a Kaali Maa temple, along with the ashram of Sage Dayananda.
Next, we are heading to the Tapovan Caves. We need to climb up to reach the God Shiva temple and the beautiful viewpoint. But that’s not all—there’s also a hidden Hanumanji temple on the other side of the hills. Be careful, though—it’s quite difficult to reach. I wouldn't recommend taking elders or children, as the path can be risky. However, the temple is truly amazing. Inside, we can see a small and beautiful swayambhu murti of Hanumanji.
