In a significant boost to India's indigenous defence manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence is set to sign a ? 66,000-crore contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the supply of 97 additional Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Mk-1As). According to a report by the Hindustan Times, HAL Chairman and Managing Director DK Sunil announced on Monday that the deal is expected to be finalized in October 2025, shortly after HAL delivers the first two of the 83 LCA Mk-1A jets already on order to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The LCA Mk-1A, an advanced variant of the indigenously developed Tejas fighter jet, is a critical component of the IAF's modernization efforts.
DK Sunil emphasized HAL's readiness to move forward with the contract, stating, "We are getting the paperwork ready and hope to conclude the contract in October." He further noted that once the deal is signed, HAL will initiate related contracts, including a crucial $1 billion agreement with US-based GE Aerospace for 113 F404-IN20 engines to power the new jets. This engine deal, also expected to be finalized in October, underscores.
