This ancient technique is called Kintsugi. Instead of hiding damage, craftsmen first repair broken pottery using natural lacquer, allowing it to harden slowly. Then they reinforce it with layers made from rice glue, cotton, and wood powder, restoring strength without erasing the damage.

The surface is carefully polished using tokusa, a natural plant used like sandpaper. Finally, a clear coating is applied—and gold dust is added to highlight the cracks instead of hiding them.

The result is a piece that becomes more valuable after it breaks.
