David Morrell Jr. Moves On from Canelo: Crawford vs. Madrimov Fight Card & Boxing Highlights

Hey everyone, welcome back to JAFTrends! Today, we’re diving into the latest in the boxing world, focusing on David Morrell Jr. and his bold move to the light heavyweight division.

David Morrell Jr. is taking charge of his career by leaving the super middleweight division behind. Instead of waiting for a fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Morrell is moving up to light heavyweight. This Saturday night, he will face Radivoje Kalajdzic on the undercard of a loaded BMO Stadium event in Los Angeles.

With a record of 10-0, 9 KOs, and eight knockouts before the fourth round, Morrell is set to make a big impact in the 175-pound division. This division already features unbeaten titleholders like Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, and WBC interim titlist David Benavidez.

On ProBox TV’s “Deep Waters,” analysts Chris Algieri and Paulie Malignaggi discussed Morrell’s move. They praised Morrell and Benavidez for not waiting around for Canelo and carving their own paths. Morrell criticized the Alvarez-Berlanga fight as a “bullshit fight,” reflecting widespread frustration about Canelo avoiding tougher opponents.

Malignaggi noted that Morrell and Benavidez might fight each other before getting a chance at Canelo, emphasizing their determination to make their own paths. Despite the International Boxing Federation stripping Alvarez for not honoring his mandatory, Malignaggi criticized other sanctioning bodies for their lack of action.

Morrell’s upcoming opponent, Kalajdzic, has a 29-2 record with 21 knockouts. Kalajdzic previously fought Beterbiev but was knocked out in the fifth round. Algieri expects Morrell to shine and potentially become a superstar in the light heavyweight division.

Algieri also highlighted how top fighters like Jaron “Boots” Ennis often face avoidance, yet continue to push forward. Malignaggi added that if Canelo chooses to fight you, it might be because he doesn’t see you as a serious threat, a sentiment shared by many in the boxing community.
