VIDEO DESCRIPTION:

The Battle of Clontarf, fought on Easter weekend in 1014 in the Dublin suburban area of Clontarf, is often misunderstood. The battle was fought between Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland and a coalition of Norse Gael Dublin, a rebel alliance of Leinster and Viking mercenaries from the Isle of Mann, Orkney and beyond. It was a pivotal moment in Irish history, and the story of Clontarf remains a beacon of Gaelic culture and inspiration for many on the island of Ireland.

However, strawman arguments, modern political ideologies, and revisionism are used to downplay the battle's importance and meaning for Ireland. Much of the dialogue around this historic event revolves around a mixture of colonial trauma and underappreciation of who we really were and what we were capable of as Irish (Gaelic) people. In this video, I attempt to dispel some of these narratives. I discuss who was involved in the battle and the context of the event. Its impact is still felt today and should be acknowledged as Ireland's most crucial battle ever fought. It is a source of inspiration and the main reason I started my brand, Invasion Island.

*One slight oversight I need to point out is that the Vikings started raiding Ireland in the late 8th Century; it was the mid-late 9th Century when they began establishing themselves on the land, building their settlements and forts.*
