In this video we compare the Nest vs Nest with a helpful chart showing the features of each smart thermostat. The Nest Thermostat also known as the Nest Gen 3 Thermostat has been one of the most popular smart thermostats for years. Then Nest launched the lower cost Nest E smart thermostat with many of the same features as the Nest Thermostat.

The biggest differences between the Nest Thermostat and Nest E is that the Nest Thermostat has a built in motion sensor, is compatible with more systems and is built with stainless steel and glass vs plastic.

The Nest Thermostats built in motion sensor helps it better detect when you are home or away to help you save energy while the Nest E does not have a built in motion sensor. The Nest E however can detect if you are home or away using the GPS location of your phone on the app or with other Nest Devices like the smart lock or Nest Smoke Detectors which can detect if you are home or away.

Nest vs Nest E Compatibility: The Nest (Gen 3) Thermostat is designed to be compatible with more advanced heating and cooling systems and standard HVAC systems and Heat Pumps. The Nest (Gen 3 ) can accommodate 2 stage heating and cooling and other accessories like humidifiers and dehumidifiers.

The Nest E has fewer terminals on it so it does not work with 2 stage heating and cooling systems. It still works with Heat Pumps and Standard HVAC systems but not with more advanced heating and cooling systems. If you have a heat pump it won't let you connect both the heat pump and a humidifier or dehumidifier.

Another key difference of the Nest (Gen 3) vs Nest E is that the Nest Thermostat is made of higher end materials like stainless steel and glass while the Nest E is primarily made of plastic. The Nest Gen 3 comes in several different finishes and looks elegant on a wall, you can even feel how smoothly the outer ring turns on the Nest. The Nest E has more of a plastic look to it, with a lower resolution screen and you can feel some grittiness when turning the outer ring on the Nest E.
