I have to admit that I am in love with trees, especially those alpine trees that reside on the edge of life and death.

Not so much Krumholtz. Those are the ancient dwarf trees that grow so thick in some places along timberline, that it is impossible to fight your way through them. Occasionally you can find a game trail that has pushed a pathway through, because the animals have been trekking through these areas for the same centuries that the trees have been living there.

No, I am fascinated by the stately bonsai-like trees that grow in these inhospitable places. They’ve been created to withstand harsh environments. In fact, these very factors are what contributes to their long life. The extreme cold and wind fosters slow growth, which builds very dense wood. This makes them resistant to bugs, fungus, rot, and other life-threatening diseases. These trees live far away from the masses, which means forest fires can rarely reach them.

The rugged alpine trees that I encounter in the mountains seem to have their own personalities. It is hard to not imagine them watching over the world, season after season, century after century. The oldest living thing on earth is a Bristlecone pine living in California. It was nearly 3000 years old when Jesus was a baby. How can you be 5,000 years old and not be wise?
