NEW SEASON: PORTUGAL
POV of Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal. A real take without the travel vlogger hype. It's the content I wish I had watched before I went to Portugal.
Has there ever been a better example of the harmony between Man and Nature? To me, The Pena Palace Gardens are proof alone, that we are not a parasite on the earth.
This garden didn't simply grow this way, it was carefully crafted and allowed to flourish providing a template for what's possible when we work with Nature and support biodiversity and protection.
We just need seeds and time.
A little about this magical space:
The Pena Palace Gardens, enveloping the vibrant Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, sprawl across over 200 hectares, renowned for their eclectic blend of over 2,000 exotic plants, romantic 19th-century landscaping, and breathtaking vistas.
Designed under the vision of King Ferdinand II in the 1840s, the gardens complement the palace’s flamboyant Romanticist architecture with winding paths, hidden grottos, and ornamental features like fountains, lakes, and pavilions.
The diverse plant collection, including camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas, and towering sequoias, was carefully curated to reflect Ferdinand’s passion for botany and global exploration, with species sourced from Asia, Australia, and the Americas.
This lush, fairytale-like setting, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is celebrated for its harmonious mix of natural beauty and artistic design, offering visitors a serene yet whimsical escape framed by the Sintra hills.
The gardens’ history and appearance stem from Ferdinand II’s desire to create a romantic retreat inspired by European Romanticism and his travels. Influenced by German and English garden traditions, he transformed the rugged terrain around the former Hieronymite monastery, which became the palace, into a landscaped masterpiece.
The forest, a key component, features dense, almost mystical woodlands with meandering trails leading to scenic viewpoints like the Cruz Alta, the highest point in Sintra. The gardens’ eclectic style, blending formal layouts with wild, naturalistic areas, reflects the era’s fascination with the sublime beauty of nature.
Known for their vibrant biodiversity and as a backdrop to the colorful palace, the gardens remain a symbol of 19th-century royal ambition and aesthetic innovation, drawing global visitors for their unique charm and historical significance.
I hope this atmospheric vlog inspired you to go seek this wonders out for yourself.
Stay magical,
