Meteorologist Anthony Farnell and his dog Storm show you how to build your very own rain gauge using simple household items. Unlike snowstorms in the winter, you can’t just use a ruler to measure how much rain falls in a summer thunderstorm. A rain gauge helps you see exactly how much rain fell at your house, even if it happens at night when you’re sleeping.

This easy to assemble rain gauge can be used to figure out if you need to water the lawn or garden and if you keep track of your measurements you can even calculate how much rain falls over the course of a week or even month.

What you need for this experiment

1. A clear empty water or pop bottle
2. Tape
3. Scissors
4. Ruler
5. Permanent Marker
6. Gravel, pebbles or marbles

Instructions:

Cut your bottle at the 3/4 mark all the way around
Add small stones to the bottom so it doesn’t blow away
Flip the top half of the bottle and insert it into the bottom half as a funnel
Tape around the edge to secure
Measure from zero up to at least ten and mark each centimetre on the side of the bottle
Place rain gauge in an open area away from trees and your house
Wait for it to rain
