STORYLINE:

Peru's Congress has voted to kick out two congresswomen loyal to ex-President Alberto Fujimori and to bar them from holding public office for five years.

In a 65-1 vote, with three abstentions, lawmakers late on Thursday censured Luz Salgado and Carmen Lozada, longtime stalwarts in Fujimori's New Majority-Change 90 political coalition.

They were allegedly part of a plot to circumvent a referendum that would have prevented Fujimori's constitutionally questionable re-election bid last year.

"We are victims of political persecution for defending our ideas and the good government of Fujimori," Lozada told radio station Radioprogramas.

Thirteen ex-legislators and two former ministers also were barred from holding public office until 2006.

The politicians all took part in an April 1998 meeting, covertly videotaped, that showed now-jailed intelligence chief Vladimiro Montesinos mapping out Fujimori's election victory.

Fujimori won last year in a fraud-riddled vote arranged by Montesinos, but fled to his parents' homeland, Japan, as corruption scandals surrounding his ex-spy chief sank his government.

The two congresswomen will be replaced by other members of their party who received fewer votes in elections last April.

For eight years, Fujimori enjoyed a majority in the 120-seat Congress that rubber-stamped his policies.

Montesinos is accused of securing much of that support with favours, bribes and coercion.

Fujimori's supporters were reduced to three seats in this year's elections.
