Those in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEM) understand the benefit of diversity. We also know that biases, including those within colleges and universities, have marginalized many different groups and denied opportunities in STEM. How do we untie ourselves from these practices? How do we give ourselves access to the full range of talent for STEM?

We’re proud to introduce a new initiative of the AAAS that supports a community committed to and working to achieve diversity and inclusion in STEM—SEA Change. Using the SEA Change framework, which is inspired by the Athena SWAN gender equity charter in the United Kingdom, institutions undertake a self-assessment of their policies, programs, processes, and practices to determine what barriers exist that would hamper access to STEM for groups marginalized within STEM. They will develop a thoughtful plan to address barriers, with research-based actions that collectively begin to change their system to one that is supportive of success for all.
