I went to see an exhibition by Grayson Perry (one of the most influential contemporary artists in the UK) at the Wallace Collection about two weeks ago, and it turned out to be such a fun surprise.

Perry invented a fictional character, Shirley Smith, who believes she’s the “rightful heir” to the Wallace Collection—though of course it’s only her delusion. Through Shirley’s perspective, the artist created an entire room of works: vibrant, childlike, slightly grotesque, but also emotionally intense and full of energy.

Walking through the show felt like stepping into a bizarre yet fabulous party where satire and sincerity mingled together. Even the famous Rococo masterpieces like Madame de Pompadour and The Swing were reinterpreted with Perry’s daring humor—I really loved it.

Hopefully one day we’ll get to see a Grayson Perry exhibition together.
