Dr. Apoorva Pallam Reddy, Gynaecologist at Mathrutva Fertility Centre, Bangalore, India advises on air travel for a pregnant lady. She shares some tips to make your air travel comfortable.

Air travel is considered fairly safe for pregnant women these days, owing to the well-designed aircraft. The best time to travel for expectant women is during the second trimester as it carries the lowest risk.

Women with complicated or multiple pregnancies should avoid travelling after 32 weeks of the gestation period.

“Don’t forget to consult your doctor before embarking on travel. Most of the airline services ask for a medical certificate from your gynaecologist. It is advisable to keep your journey short, carry your health records and medicine close by. Be ready with a contingency plan, for any emergencies.”

Follow these tips to travel safely and comfortably:
Wear loose and comfortable clothes.
Fasten your seatbelt below your bump.
If possible walk around the aisle. Don’t forget to hold on to seats while walking.
Do calf exercises. You should check for these exercises beforehand.
Stay hydrated.
Wear compression stockings to avoid thrombosis.
Eat light before and during the flight.
Choose a seat closer to the restroom.
Carry snacks with you.

In case you have one of these complications, it is best to avoid air travel:
Recent haemorrhage
Cardiac disease
Severe anaemia
Respiratory disease
Recent bone fracture
