The year of 1306 saw Robert Bruce claim the throne of Scots in defiance of Edward Longshanks, King of England, however, King Robert's reign began disastrously with defeats and tragedies forcing his withdrawal from his own kingdom, as the English occupiers retained the upper-hand.

By early 1307, the Bruce returned from his exile determined to fight in a new way, which would eventually lead to the momentous Battle of Loudoun Hill. Loudoun Hill marked the turning point in the war for Scottish independence, fought seven years before the Bruce's more famous triumph at Bannockburn.
