What's So Great About a Flail Mower?

When I started this channel I would never have guessed my "most asked" question. I get more people wanting to know why I've never discussed flail mowers than any other topic. The reason I've never talked about them is I've had no experience with them. They're not popular in my area, they're generally not sold here, and I don't even know anyone who owns one for me to video around.

A couple of months back I had a message on Facebook again asking about flail mowers and I decided that it was time to act. I picked up the phone and called Rhino Ag, because I knew they were somewhat familiar with my channel and, having sold their products in the past, knew they offered a flail mower. They offered to ship to my area a flail mower, a finish mower and a brush hog, or rotary cutter, to evaluate side-by-side in the field. In the past few weeks I've been videoing around their stuff while it's here, covering different topics, today we get down to business about flail mowers.

Josh Trolinger is Rhino Ag's Large Accounts Sales Manager, and he's had quite a bit of experience with flail mowers. He told me they're no used in the midwest that much, except on golf courses, because of our rough ground and uneven terrain. They are widely used on the coasts, and in areas where a manicured look is needed and safety from thrown objects is of critical importance.

Flails also do a nice job of cutting...we'll compare them, finish mowers and rotary cutters in the next video, and this one didn't work the tractor as much as I thought it would. I was a little impressed with the capabilities of a flail. They're quite a bit more money than the alternatives, but this one is built like a tank and will easily outlast a finish mower (or maybe two or three) for the person who wants a nice "groomed" cut for their estate.

Thanks to Rhino Ag for providing the products for me to do this video. I especially like putting these together when I get to learn something new in the process and everything I learned in this video was new because when I started I knew nothing about flail mowers.
