China's strategic combination of the YJ-21 missile system with the formidable Type 055 large destroyer, recognized as one of the world's most heavily-armed warships, represents a potentially effective strategy to challenge and counter U.S. maritime dominance.

It is reputed to achieve a flight speed of Mach 6, culminating in a terminal speed of Mach 10.
In terms of operational range, the YJ-21 demonstrates its capability by covering approximately 930 miles (1,500 kilometers ).

The Type 055, also known as the Renhai class in the West, is classified as a cruiser rather than a destroyer by the U.S. military and others due to its impressive size.

This surface combatant, despite its size, boasts impressive speed, estimated at 30 knots. It combines this agility with stealth features and is equipped with one of the most advanced Electronic Warfare systems ever installed on a warship.

The Type 055's versatile VLS arrays are capable of accommodating various air-to-surface and surface-to-surface missile types. This system can launch a range of missiles, including members of the YJ-18 and CJ-10 families for land-attack and anti-ship purposes, the YJ-83 anti-ship cruise missile, the HQ-16 and HQ-9 surface-to-air missiles, and the Yu-8 rocket-assisted torpedo. Notably, it can also deploy the enigmatic YJ-21 Hypersonic anti-ship missile.
