The e-Tron GT is the first fully electric car from Audi to be built in Germany. It rolls off the assembly line at the Audi Böllinger Höfe in Neckarsulm. The local production facility for small series was expanded and rebuilt for its new role. The craftsmanship of the previous system was supplemented by digital processes and intelligent technologies. During the expansion, production planners used new virtual methods. The production of the e-tron GT was designed without physical prototypes - a first for Audi.

The body shop combines the skilled craftsmanship of the employees with the full potential of automated production technology. It consists of an innovative body assembly line, which each body passes twice. It is built around the so-called two-way frame, in which ten robots are used to fix the indoor and outdoor areas. It combines all the production steps for connecting the side walls in one system and thus enables the Audi e-Tron GT to be produced on the existing floor space. The so-called correlation-free inline measurement method for the body is also new. It guarantees even greater accuracy and can react very quickly to tiny deviations. At the end of the body assembly line, precise craftsmanship comes into play: Experienced employees assemble the additional parts and check the finished body.

The e-Tron GT shares the assembly line with the high-performance Audi R8 sports car - this integration of two technically completely different vehicles is unique in the Volkswagen Group. The expanded assembly line includes 36 cycles instead of the previous 16. Both models are moved with the same driverless transport vehicles and an electrically powered monorail system, with humans and robots working side by side at one station on the line. Once completed, each car will be driven 40 kilometres on public roads, including sections on the motorway and in urban traffic.

The production of the Audi e-Tron GT quattro and the RS e-Tron GT in the Böllinger Höfe is climate-neutral. As at the entire Neckarsulm site, 100 percent green electricity is used in production. A block-type thermal power station fired with biogas supplies the necessary heat for the Böllinger Höfe. Emissions that cannot yet be avoided are offset with emission credits from certified climate protection projects.

Audi also relies on vehicle manufacturing that conserves resources. In this way, production in the Böllinger Höfe avoids the use of paper and packaging and uses closed control loops, for example. The aluminium sheet waste that accumulates in the print shop, for example during the manufacture of the side panel frame, is returned to the supplier, where it is overhauled and reused at Audi. Audi has started a pilot project for plastics recycling. Plastic waste is made into fibbers, and these filaments are then used in 3D printers to make tools for the production process.
