A boy band group Seo Taiji and Boys filmed their music video at the Cheorwon Nodongdangsa (Office of the Former Worker's Party). Their song was released in 1994. The song indicated a hope for the reunification of Korea. It informed the general South Korean public about the Nodongdangsa.

Construction of the Seungil Bridge began in 1948 before the Korean War when the region was North Korean territory. It was completed in 1958 after the region became South Korean. It was designed and partially built by the North Koreans. They used a Russian arch construction method. After the Armistice, the South Koreans completed the bridge. The North Koreans originally named the bridge as the Hantan Bridge. There are two theories on why the name was changed. One is that the name came from the names in Rhee Syng-man and Kim Il-sung (Syng-Il = Seungil). Another theory is that the name came from a South Korean colonel named Park Seung-il who got shot by a North Korean when he was leading his men across the bridge. (Another source claims that he was taken prisoner and was taken across the bridge). Due to the age of the Seungil Bridge, a new bridge called the Hantan Bridge was built next to it in 1999. The Seungil Bridge became the 26th Registered Cultural Property in May 31, 2002.

After the Armistice, the North Koreans dug a tunnel under the DMZ in this region to infiltrate into South Korea. More tunnels were discovered in the other regions of the DMZ, including a region northwest of Seoul.
