How to Grow Dahlias from Tubers - Plant Now for Beautiful Early Blooms

Potting Up Dahlias - Find a suitable pot, choose one that is at least 10”- 12” wide and at least 12” deep. Dahlias are large plants so I prefer a heavier pot for stability and one that is short and fat compared to tall and skinny. When deciding on what to fill the pot with, use a soilless potting mix; avoid using soil or clay as it can compact in the container. Potting mix is light and airy, allowing for excellent air movement and drainage. Fill the pot 1/3 full with the potting mix. Make sure the bulb is as clean as possible. If you bought the bulb, it will already be clean but if you dug them up in the fall, you will want to gently brush off as much dirt as you can. Place the eye of the bulb as close to the center of pot as possible. Cover the bulb just enough to cover the eye, about 1” above (you can also leave the eye a little exposed if you’d like to see when it starts to sprout). Place your stakes in the pot now along the edges. As the roots develop they will grow around the stakes and lock them in place more so than if you put the stakes in after the plant is established. This also limits the chance of injuring roots when placing the stakes. Gently water the bulb and continue to water lightly when potting mix is dry. As the dahlia sprouts and grows, slowly add more mix as the stalk grows up; be careful not to cover the top growing point or leaves, only fill around the stalk. Stop filling the pot when you reach 1” below the rim. This will leave enough room for watering. Once temperatures have reached above 60 degrees, you can move your dahlia outside for the season. Fertilize weekly. If started indoors, supplemental light may be needed.
