In the last few days, there have been different reactions to claims of a court judgment invalidating marriages conducted at the Ikoyi registry in Lagos.

The Lagos Division of the Federal High Court has however affirmed that marriages conducted at the Ikoyi and Abuja Federal Marriage Registry are legal. It however ruled marriages outside Local Governments’ Marriage Registry illegal.

The controversy began years ago with a suit filed by the four local government areas in the country, where the federal court registries are sited.

Many couples prefer to have their marriage solemnised at the federal marriage registries as opposed to the registries owned by local government areas with the belief that the marriage certificate issued there is superior to that issued by the local government marriage registry.
