March Madness doesn’t need to be expanded. No one in college basketball has made even a remotely compelling case for way more teams are needed that doesn’t involve administrators looking for more money or coaches wanting more job security.

However, there is no point in fighting a losing fight. A 64-team tournament, 68 TECHNICALLY, is going to be a thing of the past like it or not. The key now is keeping the essence of the Big Dance the same. The upsets, the Cinderella stories, the unpredictability that we all love.

Instead of arguing for something that won’t happen, I would much prefer the NCAA Tournament don’t completely crap the bad when it comes to expansion. I believe there is a very simple way to make it work. Maybe not quite as good as the current incarnation of the Big Dance but the least bad of some terrible options.

The key is finding the magical number of teams. You have probably heard some of the numbers floated. 72, 76, 80, 96…69…420. These are not the answer. All they do is create issues and take us further away from the March Madness format we like best. An even playing field. A clean easy bracket. And an environment that allows underdogs to have their day. Without that. The NCAA Tournament has nothing.

By the way, how Tom Izzo and Greg Sankey among other college basketball power brokers don’t understand that is ridiculous. If they want to expand March Madness, here is the right way to do it.
