Drops of Death: The Tragic Death of Karen Wetterhahn | Accidental Deaths

Karen Elizabeth Wetterhahn was an American scientist who specialised in toxic metal exposure at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She died at the age of 48 from mercury poisoning caused by an unintentional exposure to the organic mercury complex dimethylmercury.

Her condition gradually deteriorated despite extensive chelation therapy. Wetterhahn sank into what looked to be a vegetative state broken by episodes of severe agitation three weeks after the initial neurological symptoms surfaced. She died on June 8, 1997.
