In commemorating a newborn's first month or the birthdays of elders, Ang Ku Kueh (red tortoise cakes) is traditionally used as auspicious gifts by Hokkiens. Made of soft, sticky glutinous rice flour, the striking red pastry symbolises blessings and longevity for the child/elderly. Interestingly, a pointed version called Ang Yee (红丸) is given as gift if the baby is a boy, and Ang Ku Kueh (红龟粿) for a girl.

Established since 1985, the pastry shop is also known for its wide range of And Ku Kueh flavours such as coconut, yam, durian, coffee etc. What's more, they are dressed in colours that captivate one’s eyes!

Inspired by Singapore’s founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the pastry's mini Ang Ku Kueh, is very popular among its regular customers. Watch the video to see the pastry's traditional way of hand making the kueh!

The shop also makes Ka Ta Kueh (脚踏粿), shaped with a larger mould, about the size of adult's palm. Sold in pairs, they are used in a traditional social practice when a baby turns one year old. The baby steps on the kueh, then into a new pair of shoes, to symbolise the parents' wish to give their child a smooth journey in life.
