Tagalog speakers say "Walo", Indonesians say "Delapan" and Malaysians say "Lapan". Why?

Most Austronesian languages have a similar word for the number "8" - "walo", "walu", "valo", "valu" etc. - except Malay-Indonesian and a few languages in Western Indonesia. In this video, we will examine the process of semantic shift and replacement and discover why some languages would want to replace common everyday vocabulary such as basic numbers. Malay-Indonesian had replaced basic numbers such as "3", "7", "8" and "9" either with loanwords or else with complex constructions ("two taken from ten" etc.)
