In 2015, Maines was featured in the book Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family. It was a New York Times bestseller and made the list of notable or best books of 2015 in the New York Times, People and Men’s Journal. It was also a Stonewall Honor Book and a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction.

Maines won a GLAAD Media Award in January 2016 and was a Variety “Power of Young Hollywood” and Variety “Power of Pride” honoree. In 2020, she was an HRC “Upstander Award” honoree for her activism and continues to be a tireless champion for trans rights.

Maines is breaking barriers in Hollywood and paving the way for trans actors. Her credits include starring in Showtime’s critically acclaimed Yellowjackets, the CW’s The Flash and the CW’s Supergirl, in which she portrayed the first transgender superhero.
