Citizenship is about how we choose to behave.

In this TEDx Talk Simon suggest It has nothing to do with the colour of our passports; citizens are people who take responsibility for their communities and who welcome others into community.

We can learn much about citizenship from people with disabilities; they have learnt the hard way that to achieve full citizenship people need lives with meaning, freedom, money, help, home, community and love.

When we take our citizenship seriously, and work to ensure everyone has the keys to citizenship then we have the means to live together as equals, in all our wonderful diversity. Dr Simon Duffy is a philosopher and social activist, based in Sheffield. He has written several books, most recently Everyday Citizenship, with Wendy Perez, a friend and colleague with learning disabilities. Simon believes that everybody matters and that we need to create a world of citizenship to tackle the big problems of today. He is Director of the Citizen Network Research, President of Citizen Network Coop and Chair of Citizen’s Basic Income Trust. In 2008 he was awarded the RSA’s Prince Albert Medal for inventing personal budgets in social care. He has worked closely with Doncaster’s People-Focused Group since its beginning and is involved in a wide range of projects to reform democracy, the economy and public services. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
