They say a pound on your foot is equal to 5 pounds on your back. To find out if it’s true I test out the new KEEN NXIS waterproof shoe to see if a lightweight shoe really has benefits over traditional (and heavy) hiking boots. While my experience wasn’t exactly what I was expecting I took the opportunity to explore all the differences between Hiking boots and lightweight Hiking shoes.

Here are all the things I like and some of the things I don’t like about the KEEN NXIS Shoes.

PRO NUMBER ONE: KEEN DRY Waterproof Membrane
PRO NUMBER TWO: NXIS Shoes are Lightweight at only 14oz each (Men’s Size 9)
PRO NUMBER THREE: Deep U-shaped lugs give good traction across varied terrain
PRO NUMBER FOUR: Great Arch Support
PRO NUMBER FIVE: I feel more Agile in the KEEN NXIS compared to my bulky Hiking Boots

CON NUMBER ONE: At $180 the NXIS shoes are on the higher end of typical hiking shoe cost
CON NUMBER TWO: You need to spend time breaking them in to prevent blisters.
CON NUMBER THREE: I experienced some strange bruising where the shoe collar came in contact with my heal. (But that is probably just me)

All in all the KEEN NXIS Hiking shoes is a great option for anyone wanting to switch from heavier hiking boots to a lightweight shoe. You can gain some of the benefits of a lighter shoe while maintaining some of the features of your hiking boots.
