STORYLINE:

UN envoy Terje Roed-Larsen met Lebanese officials in Beirut on Tuesday to monitor the progress of the Syrian pull-out from Lebanon.

Larsen met outgoing Lebanese Interior Minister Suleiman Franjieh, whose department is heading the investigation into former Lebanese premier Rafik Hariri's killing.

The Interior Ministry is also organising parliamentary elections, which should be held before the Lebanese legislature's mandate runs out on May 31.

Roed-Larsen, later held talks with Lebanon's outgoing defence minister and army commander and discussed Syria's pledge to completely withdraw from Lebanon by the end of this month.

The UN envoy said he held "very good talks" on implementing Security Council resolutions, particularly 1559, which calls for the complete withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon and for Damascus to stop interfering in Lebanese politics.

Outgoing Lebanese defence minister Abdul Rahim Murad said the Lebanese army was capable of filling the vacuum after the Syrian withdrawal.

The Lebanese military also allowed the UN envoy to tour the cleared out premises that once housed Syria's main intelligence units in southern Beirut.


In Mdeirej, a mountain village overlooking the eastern Bekaa Valley, Syrian troops were seen filling four trucks with equipment in one of their positions.
